SSW Global Immigration round-up

In the fast-paced world of global immigration, rules are subject to regular changes and new visa categories for workers and visitors are frequently introduced by governments worldwide.

With this in mind, the Global Immigration team at Smith Stone Walters would like to make our clients and followers aware of the following recent updates.

Travel Updates from Europe: Denmark

Denmark has announced travellers from Albania, North Macedonia, Lebanon and Serbia will be allowed to enter the country free of quarantine and double testing requirements as of 19 June. However, travellers will be required to obtain a Covid-19 test upon arrival.

The yellow category country list for eased travel restrictions also include several regions of Greece, Spain, France and Switzerland. Full list of countries can be viewed here.

Travellers from orange countries who have received both doses of their vaccinations from a European Medicine Agency authorised vaccine will not need to adhere to Covid-19 related entry restrictions.

Removal of temporary visa restrictions to Ireland

Since January 2021, nationals of South Africa, Brazil and other South American countries had endured temporary entry and transit visa restrictions, which came to an end on 16 June.

Passport holders from the below countries can now enter Ireland without acquiring entry or transit visa prior to travel:

  • Argentina
  • Bolivia
  • Brazil
  • Chile
  • Guyana
  • Paraguay
  • South Africa
  • Uruguay

It should be noted that individuals will still need to meet the conditions of entry attached to their purpose of stay. You can check whether your passport allows visa free travel on the Irish government website.

Mauritius: Upcoming Improvement to Permits

A proposal by the Minister of Finance in Mauritius provides guidelines to attract and retain skilled foreign nationals and increase foreign investment. Once approved by the Parliament, the proposal may bring the following changes on the Occupation Permit:

  • Permit extension from 3 to 10 years
  • Permit holders can switch employer without submitting a new application
  • Switching from another permit to an Occupation Permit
  • Allow self-employed permit holders to employ staff
  • Spouses to be allowed to work without a permit
  • Minimum salary to be reduced to MUR 30,000 from MUR 60,000
  • New Occupation Permit category for investors
  • Maximum age for dependents to be waived
  • Smart Card to replace paper-based Occupation Permit
