Right to work checks online from January
A fully online Right to Work checking service will launch on 28 January 2019.
While employers have been able to use this free, voluntary system since April, they have still needed to request physical documents to evidence an employee’s right to work.
In providing up to date, real time information about migrants’ right to work, the Home Office hope their new system will reduce the possibility of forged documents being presented to employers.
The Immigration Minister Caroline Nokes called this change ‘another step to simplify and modernise the immigration system.’
The online right to work checking service is now open for non-EU nationals who hold a current biometric residence permit, and for EU nationals who have acquired settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme.
Once fully established, the service will also allow UK nationals without British passports to demonstrate their citizenship by simply using their short birth or adoption certificates.
