More EU support for migrants
The European Commission has announced a new project launched with a view to promoting and protecting the rights of migrants moving between developing countries. The project, which is worth over ten million euros, focusses on migrants who carry out domestic work in the recipient country along with those who fall victim to human trafficking.
The project was launched at a joint event with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) during a policy forum on development. Figures have been cited which suggest that out of 232m migrants worldwide, over half reside in low and middle income countries. The project comes as part of the EU Development Commissioner’s recognition that these sort of figures require effective governance.
The direct social assistance which the project aims to provide includes access to healthcare, legal assistance and reintegration measures such as training or interpreting services. It will be implemented by the IFRC and will target origin, transit and destination from within Africa and North Africa, the Americas, Asia and the Middle East.
