Can the Home Office meet the Brexit challenge?

As of 18 October 2017, the Home Affairs Committee launched an inquiry that aims to explore the capacity of the Home Office and whether they are equipped to cater for Brexit and the challenges that they will face in light of the impending changes.

The inquiry is wide-ranging and covers immigration, policing and security cooperation and custom controls. In relation to the specific area of immigration, the Home Affairs Committee is looking to gauge whether the Home Office has the capacity to register existing EU nationals living in the United Kingdom and deliver immigration services post-Brexit.

Following on from an initial evidence session was held on 10 October when the Committee heard oral evidence on the current capacity of the Home Office, the extent of this call for written evidence incorporates the following issues:

  • What challenges does Brexit present for the Home Office’s effective management of immigration at the border and how might the Home Office meet them?
  • What different challenges do the ‘no deal’ and ‘transition period’ scenarios pose for the Home Office and how might they be met?
  • What challenges does Brexit pose to enforcement of the immigration system?

If you wish to submit written evidence on the inquiry or make any recommendations for action by the Government which you would like the committee to consider, the deadline for submitting feedback is Monday 6 November 2017.
