Brexit: High Court rules for parliament vote
Theresa May’s intention to trigger Article 50 early next year seems unlikely following last week’s High Court Ruling.
The High Court has ruled that Parliament must vote on whether or not the UK should begin the process of leaving the European Union (EU).
The ruling means that the government must have the approval of parliament before it can trigger Article 50 and begin official exit negotiations with the EU.
The government has appealed against this decision, despite the Lord Chief Justice declaring that:
“the government does not have power under the Crown’s prerogative to give notice pursuant to Article 50 for the UK to withdraw from the European Union”.
Should the ruling remain un-turned, it may be many months before Parliament vote on whether or not the UK should exit the EU and the Prime Minister’s intention to trigger Article 50 by March 2017 may be considerably delayed.
