Factsheet: The Student
Route

On 5 October 2020, the Tier 4 (General) student route closed and was replaced by the Student visa route.

This new and improved immigration route is open to both EU and non-EU nationals who have been offered a place on a course by a licensed student sponsor. Forming part of the UK’s points-based immigration system, applicants must score the requisite 70 points by demonstrating that they have an offer to study at an approved educational institution (50 points), they can speak English (10 points) and they are able to support themselves financially throughout their studies in the UK (10 points).

This guide provides an overview of the route and the application process, and addresses some frequently asked questions.
