Smith Stone Walters will be attending discussions on proposals for a London-specific immigration system this November.
Much of the post-vote Brexit discussion has centred on immigration to the UK and the industries which it supports. Businesses across the country, and particularly in London, have expressed their concerns at no longer being able to access the talent which they need in order to maintain and grow their organisations.
The event, Permits, Points & Visas – Securing a Practical Immigration Policy for London, will explore how policy makers could approach the pressing matter of protecting skilled immigration to the UK in the face of Brexit, and will be attended by economic, immigration and industry specialists.
The discussions will include the proposal of a London-only work permit which is expected by London major Sadiq Khan later this autumn.
The continuance of skilled migration into London and the UK is key to protecting the UK’s powerhouse reputation. The UK is recognised as a global leader across many industries but much of this success can be attributed to the talent and skills of a multi-national workforce.
The ability of the UK to attract the best and brightest minds from around the world has been a something which the government has consistently tried to support.
London major Sadiq Khan has also committed to supporting this rhetoric: ‘Whether it’s insurers, banks or tech entrepreneurs, a key concern is whether losing EU membership will mean they find it more difficult to get talent to London’.
It is hoped that the discussions will appease the fears of UK business and industry leaders by coming up with a plan of action should a hard-line exit from the European Union become a reality.
