If you have successfully applied for a UK visa you will receive a letter from the Home Office confirming that permission for you to enter and remain in the UK for the stipulated amount of time has been granted.

Following this news, it will be time to begin the exciting process of planning for the move!

There are, however, a few more important steps in the UK immigration process which you must take in order to ensure that your move is a success.

Around the same time as receiving your confirmation letter, you will be issued with a short term 30-day visa. This is so that you can enter the UK before collecting your final proof of permission to be in the country: your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP).

How, when and where to collect your BRP

This BRP will remain your main proof of permission to be in the UK for the duration of your stay and can only be collected once you are in the country. After using your short term 30-day visa to enter the UK, you must pick up your BRP within 10 days of your arrival from the Post Office detailed in your confirmation letter.

Do I need to register my BRP?

You are able to find out whether or not you need to register your BRP with the police by looking at your 30-day short term visa, your BRP and confirmation letter. If any of these documents displays ‘pol. registration’ or ‘police registration within 7 days of arrival’ then you will need to attend your nearest police registration office with the documentation outlined below.

If you cannot find any indication on these documents that you are required to register your BRP with the police, we strongly advise you to check with your immigration advisor as to whether this information is correct.

How to register your BRP with the Metropolitan Police

If you need to register your BRP with the police, you can choose to do this either before or after you have collected your BRP.

In both cases, you will need to arrive at your nearest police registration office with the following documents:

  • Your passport (s)
  • A completed ORC Registration Proforma
  • One UK passport photograph in colour, measuring 45mm x 35mm (pasted onto the proforma)
  • Biometric Residence Permit (if registering after collecting your BRP)
  • Home Office letter showing the requirement to register
